New Delhi: In order to cater the rising passenger traffic and the demand for better services, Airports Authority of India (AAI)'s Tuticorin Airport is undergoing major up-gradation in phases with the cost of Rs 381 crores. The master project includes widening extension and strengthening work of existing runway and associated infrastructure.

Construction of a new domestic terminal building at the airport is also planned, which will spread over an area of 13,530 sqm. The new terminal building will be able to handle 600 passengers during peak hours. The new terminal building will be equipped with all the modern facilities and passenger amenities with the provision of two aero-bridges and 500 car parking facilities along with 100 taxi parking and 5 Bus / Coach parking. The building will be designed aesthetically appealing with soothing interiors matching the modern elements of architectures. 

The new domestic terminal building at Tuticorin Airport will be designed with a four-star rating under GRIHA with environmentally sustainable features. Along with the domestic terminal building, construction of new ATC Tower cum Technical Block, Fire station, isolation bay, aprons and five aircraft parking bays to park A-320 type of aircraft is also part of the project.

There is the demand for expansion of the airport as it is the only airport located beyond Madurai in southern Tamil Nadu region for improvement of trade, tourism and domestic travel in Tuticorin and neighbouring Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram and Kanyakumari districts.

The project for up-gradation and expansion of the airport is likely to be operationalised by March 2023.
