The Barbie with Down Syndrome is part of Mattel's 2023 Fashionistas line, which is aimed at increasing diversity and inclusivity.

Mattel collaborated with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to create the barbie and ensure that the doll accurately represents a person with Down Syndrome.

What's Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features and mild to moderate developmental and intellectual disability. It is caused by the presence of a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21.

According to Mattel, the NDSS provided design input for the new Barbie's features.

The Barbie's dress and accessories represent some physical traits of a person with Down's Syndrome.

The doll features a rounder shaped face, smaller ears and a flat nasal bridge with almond shaped eyes. Whilst the doll's palms include a single line, a characteristic often associated with those with Down’s Syndrome.

The doll's pink pendant necklace has three upward chevrons to represent the 21st chromosome (the genetic material that causes the characteristics associated with the condition).

The doll's floral dress additionally showcases butterflies and the yellow and blue colors that are symbols associated with Down's Syndrome awareness.

The new Barbie also has ankle foot orthotics (AFOs) in a matching pink hue, recognising those commonly worn by some children with Down's Syndrome in America.

British Model Ellie Goldstein featured with the barbie. Ellie has made history in her own right, being the first model with Down's Syndrome to front fashion campaigns for Gucci Beauty and Adidas.

Previously, Mattel has introduced a Ken doll with a prosthetic leg, a Barbie with hearing aids, and dolls with a skin condition called vitiligo.
