New Delhi: The Ministry of Power has curtailed the tenure of NHPC Ltd's Director (Personnel) NK Jain 'with immediate effect' on Thursday, NHPC said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges. "… it is to inform that Ministry of Power vide its letter no. 9/2/2021-NHPC dated 02.12.2021 has conveyed the decision regarding curtailment of tenure of Shri Nikhil Kumar Jain (DIN 05332456), Director (Personnel) of NHPC Limited with immediate effect," NHPC told the bourses. 

"Accordingly, Shri Nikhil Kumar Jain (DIN 05332456) ceased to be director on the Board of NHPC Limited with immediate effect," NHPC added. 

The order comes as a surprise decision as Jain's tenure was slated to get over in March 2022, sources aware of the matter told PSU Watch. The motive behind the decision to pre-maturely curtail the tenure of the NHPC Director (Personnel) is not yet clear. Jain was appointed to the post on February 7, 2017. NHPC's official spokesperson could not be reached for a comment at the time of publication of this story.

Prior to joining NHPC, Jain had been working as Director (Personnel) of Air India Ltd since 2012. As far as Jain's academic qualifications are concerned, he holds a BE degree in Industrial Engineering from IIT-Roorkee (1985) and an LL.B degree from University of Delhi (2010). He joined the Indian Railways as an Indian Railways Personnel Services Officer in 1988. He has served in various capacities in the Railways, including as GGM (HR). He has also worked as Executive Director (Joint Secretary) in the Ministry of Railways.
