Hyderabad airport introduces face recognition system for passengers

New Delhi: Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has introduced Face Recognition (FR) system on a trial basis for facilitating passenger entry into the aerodrome, sources said on Tuesday. The trials are being carried under Centre's Digi Yatra programme. It started from July 1 and would continue till July 3.

The airport is owned and operated by GMR Group.

180 passengers volunteered on first day

On the first day (July 1), more than 180 passengers enrolled voluntarily for the trials at Hyderabad airport, sources said. "The airport has set up dedicated FR Registration counters near the Domestic Departure Gates No 1 and 3. The registration is available from 8am to 8pm for passengers who would like a new digital experience and is completely voluntary," sources said.

How would the FR system work?

The FR system has been installed at various check points in the airport like entry point check, entry in to Security Check, aircraft boarding etc. This is aimed at facilitating self-bag drop and check-in, using facial recognition to identify pax and data recall.

How can one enrol?

For FR enrolment, passengers can visit any of the FR Registration Counters at the airport with a valid government ID card, contact details and get their face captured by the camera. After this is done, a CISF personnel would physically check the applicant's government ID proof and once it has been verified successfully, a unique DigiYatra/FR ID for the passenger is generated.

An exclusive e-gate for DigiYatris?

An exclusive e-gate is available for enrolled passengers at Departure Gate No 3. At this gate, passengers will have to get their boarding card scanned, face the FR Camera, which will verify and match the person's credentials along with the itinerary details.

Once the verification is complete, the passenger gets checked-in automatically and e-gate opens — all done within split seconds.
