India awaiting word from US’ aviation regulator to allow Boeing 737 to fly again

New Delhi: Aviation watchdog Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has said that it is waiting for its American counterpart Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to give a nod to Boeing's 737 aircraft in order to consider allowing the aircraft to fly in the country again, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Wednesday.

In a written response submitted in the Rajya Sabha, Puri said, "18 Boeing 737 Max aircraft are grounded in the country, out of which 13 are from SpiceJet and five are from Jet Airways."

'Word awaited from FAA'

"A solution from Boeing, the manufacturer, and certification of the said solution by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is awaited by DGCA to consider the safe return of the aircraft to service," Puri said.

The backdrop

The response comes weeks after Boeing said on June 26, "During the FAA's review of the 737 MAX software update and recent simulator sessions, the FAA identified an additional requirement that it has asked the company to address through the software changes that the company has been developing for the past eight months."

The aircraft was grounded by regulators across the world after an Ethiopian Airlines plane, of Boeing 737 make, crashed near Addis Ababa on March 10, killing 157 people, including four Indians. The plane was involved in two other accidents previously.
