New Delhi: Karan Thapar IRS (Customs and Central Excise: 2009) is set to be Deputy Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. According to an order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) he has been selected for the post of Deputy Secretary in the DPIIT, Delhi under the Central Staffing Scheme (CSS) for a period of four years from the date of taking over charge of the post or until the further orders, whichever is earlier. Currently, he is serving as Joint Commissioner of Customs, GST and Central Excise.

Thapar is an Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer of 2009 batch. Prior to this, he was also recommended for the Central deputation by the Department of Revenue, under the Ministry of Finance.

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is a central government department under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is responsible for the formulation and implementation of promotional and developmental measures for growth of the industrial sector, keeping in view the national priorities and socio-economic objectives. While individual administrative ministries look after the production, distribution, development and planning aspects of specific industries allocated to them, DPIIT is responsible for the overall industrial policy. It is also responsible for facilitating and increasing the foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to the country.
