New Delhi: (Coal sector news) Northern Coalfields Limited has given RS 5 crore financial support to the UP govt for procurement of new Ambulances. NCL's Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) PK Sinha met with Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath on Friday. During the meeting, Sinha handed over a Cheque of Rs 5 crore to the Chief Minister. The support is a part of NCL's corporate social responsibility (CSR) imitative. NCL's Director (Personnel) Bimlendu Kumar was also present during the meet. The financial support extended by NCL will help in strengthing the fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state during this testing time.

During the Meeting, Sinha briefed UP CM of NCL's coal operations in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. He assured an adequate amount of coal dispatch to thermal power plants of UP state taking coal from NCL. He also briefed about CSR activities in Sonbhadra district, Varanasi, and other districts of the state. He also appraised the measures taken by NCL in Sonbhadra district to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yogi Adityanath appreciated the contribution of NCL in the energy security of the Nation. He also praised NCL's effort in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. He also assured the state's support to NCL. During his visit, CMD also met with Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Rajendra Kumar Tiwari and discussed the mining, CSR and other issues of the company.

Backdrop

Earlier, PSU Watch had reported when a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the CSR wing of NCL and UP State Disaster Management Authority to provide  Rs 5 crore to the state government of Uttar Pradesh for procurement of 50 ambulances under its CSR initiatives. As part of the same MoU, the financial support to the UP govt has been extended.

It is important to mention here that in the last 5 years, NCL has undertaken development works of about Rs 80 crore under CSR in UP. The projects include solar power electrification of 80 Primary Health Centres, Financial aid for Solid Waste Management in 13 Panchayats of Varanasi, construction of Eco Park near Banaras Railway Station, around 15,000 furniture in 1,800 government schools, smart classrooms in schools, construction of roads, developing skills of youth and many more.

Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL)

NCL is a subsidiary of the largest coal producer of the world: Coal India Limited (CIL). NCL produces 15 percent of the total coal produced in the country and contributes 10 percent to the total electricity generation of the nation. The company, which is headquartered in Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh, operates through its 10 highly mechanised opencast mines spread across Singrauli and Sonebhadra districts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The company is targeting 113.25 MT of coal production in the current financial year (FY2020-21).
