NFL adorns its walls with ‘Warli’ paintings. Know what it is?

New Delhi: With a view to promote Indian folk art, National Fertilizers Limited (NFL), a Miniratna PSU under the Department of Fertilizers, has displayed Maharashtra's famous 'Warli' painting on the outer walls of its Corporate Office in Noida. Made in bright red colour, the artwork is attracting everyone. NFL has not only beautified the surrounding area through this initiative but has also aroused curiosity among people towards Warli painting. Interestingly, the Warli painting is either made in the villages of Maharashtra or seen only in large exhibitions. But now the common public is able to see these paintings on the outer wall of NFL.

According to a statement, NFL has been continuously making efforts to strengthen the cleanliness drive of the government under Swachh Bharat Campaign and this move of the company will also give a boost to the beautification of Noida. In this era of economic crisis arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic, Warli painters have also got employment from this work.

What is Warli painting?

Warli painting is a style of tribal art mostly created by the tribal people from the North Sahyadri Range in Maharashtra, India. The Warli culture is centered on the concept of Mother Nature and elements of nature are often focal points depicted in the painting. These rudimentary wall paintings use a set of basic geometric shapes: a circle, a triangle, and a square. While the circle represents the sun and the moon, the triangle is derived from mountains and pointed trees. In contrast, the square appears to be a human invention, indicating a sacred enclosure or a piece of land.
