New Delhi: NHPC Limited, Subansiri Lower Hydro Power Project has commenced the works of Downstream River Protection in the Subansiri River covered under Phase-III with laying of foundation stone today by Naba Kumar Doley, Minister of Panchayat & Rural Development, Cultural Affairs, Environment & Forest, Government of Assam & MLA, Dhakuakhana and by the Member of Parliament, Lakhimpur LS Constituency, Pradan Barua, in the presence of Arvind Bhat, Executive Director & Vipin Gupta, General Manager (In-charge), Subansiri Lower HE Project.

The foundation stone has been laid for one work package on the right bank of river Subansiri adjacent to village Tadang & Hekrajan and for two work packages of 1 Km. each adjacent to village Signori in Bhimpara Pothar area with a total estimated financial implication of approximately Rs 35 crores. The total estimated cost of Phase – III works is approximately Rs 175 crore.

PSU Watch had earlier reported that the first unit of the project is likely to be commissioned by 2022, if the progress goes as per the schedule. "The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown has been little on the construction work because the construction happens only in summer and winter months… that is between October and June. Apart from the suspension of work during the nationwide lockdown, work has progressed with the easing of restrictions in two shifts instead of three. And now, the construction work is on hold because of the monsoon. Only underground work pertaining to tunnelling etc, is going on. So, the project is on schedule so far," a source had told PSU Watch.

Subansiri lower hydroelectric project, with an installed capacity of 2,000 MW, will have eight units of 250 MW each and an annual generation of 7421.59 Million Units (MU). It is located on the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
