New Delhi: Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) Secretary Tarun Kapoor (IAS) is set to get a tenure extension on his current assignment. The government is considering the proposal for the extension in tenure of Kapoor for a period of two years, a source close to the matter told PSU Watch. Kapoor is a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. He has been serving as Secretary in MoPNG since May 2020.

Kapoor is an Engineering Graduate (BE in Elect Engineering). He has also done an MBA in Business Management. Prior to Joining Petroleum Ministry in May 2020, Kapoor was serving as Vice Chairman of Delhi Development Authority under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

Previously, he has managed many important portfolios in the Central as well as in the State Government which includes, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Managing Director of Power Transmission Corp Ltd, Director of Energy Department (Himachal Pradesh), Joint Secretary of Power Department (HP), Chairman of State Electricity Board (Shimla), Director (Personnel) of SJVN among other.

MoPNG is responsible for the exploration, production, refining, distribution, marketing, import, export, and conservation of petroleum, natural gas, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas in India. The ministry is headed by Union Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Kapoor is the Secretary of the ministry..
