RINL extends financial support for ‘RINL Centre for Medical Genetics’ at Andhra University

New Delhi: As part of corporate environment responsibility (CER), Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), has sanctioned financial support of Rs 65 lakh from CER funds to Andhra University for establishing 'RINL Centre for Medical Genetics' in Andhra University campus. As partner, Andhra University has also funded the construction of the centre. RINL-VSP has extended this financial assistance to procure major and minor equipments for the 'RINL Centre for Medical Genetics.'

RINL-VSP's Director (Personnel) & CMD (additional charge) KC Das handed over a cheque for Rs 32.5 lakh as the first spell of payment to Andhra University's Vice-Chancellor Professor PVGD Prasada Reddy at a function held at the university on Saturday. On this occasion, Das underlined the need for such a centre for medical genetics in Andhra Pradesh, as Mendelian diseases are widely prevalent and there was a need to address them. He also assured the university of support.

On the occasion, Professor Reddy outlined the initiatives being taken by the university in meeting the guidelines laid out in the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). RINL-VSP's Director (Finance) VV Venugopal Rao and Director (Operations) AK Saxena also spoke on the occasion. University's Registrar Prof V Krishna Mohan, Rector K Samatha senior faculty and senior officers from RINL also graced the occasion.

The 'RINL Centre for Medical Genetics' can help in dispensing molecular genetic diagnostic tests to all the needy people and can help in screening and identifying Mendelian diseases arising out of marriages between blood relatives and in offering genetic counselling services to the affected families. In turn, these services can help to mitigate such genetic related problems, which can be of immense benefit to people especially those residing in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam Districts and also to those residing in neighbouring states viz. Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
