New Delhi: In order to ensure the timely delivery of essential commodities for citizens and goods vital for energy and infrastructure sector during the COVID 19 lockdown, the Indian Railways has maintained service on freight corridors and has loaded 1,43,458 wagons in the last three days, the Ministry of Railways said on Thursday.

The freight corridor has been fully functional inspite of the COVID 19 lockdown and has been successful in meeting the needs of both the households sector and industry, the ministry said.

Railway freight service tally

During the last three days, Railways delivered 7,195 wagons of foodgrains, 64,567 wagons of coal, 3,314 wagons of steel and 3,838 wagons of petroleum. A total of 1,43,458 wagons of freight were loaded in the last three days.

"Issues, which were earlier being faced by Railways at many terminal points in loading and unloading operations, are being effectively resolved. Indian Railways, along with the Ministry of Home Affairs, is keeping in touch with state governments to sort out any such operational issue, if they arise," the Railways said.

The backdrop

Because of lockdown in various states to prevent the spread of COVID 19, Indian Railways staff deployed at various good sheds, stations, and control offices are working on a 24×7 basis to ensure that the supply of essential items for the nation does not get affected, the Railways had said in March. To monitor the uninterrupted movement of essential commodities over the Indian Railways system, emergency freight control is working in the Ministry of Railways. Freight movement is being closely monitored by officials at a very senior level.

Indian Railways had slashed the demurrage and wharfage rates for goods and parcel at half of the prescribed rates till March 31. The validity of rate policies pertaining to goods/container traffic has also been extended by one month up to April 30.
