New Delhi: Air India has opened bookings for select domestic flights from May 4 and for international flights from June 1 on Saturday. In the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, all passenger air services within the country and abroad have been suspended since the last week of March.

"In the light of the ongoing global health concerns, we have currently stopped accepting bookings on all domestic flights for travel till May 3, 2020, and on all international flights for travel till May 31, 2020," a notification on Air India's website said on Saturday.

What has Air India been up to during lockdown?

With passenger flights cancelled, state-run Air India has been at the helm of relief efforts being carried out by the government to fight the Coronavirus pandemic. Air India has operated several rescue flights to Wuhan in China and Rome in Italy to rescue stranded Indian citizens. It has also operated flights to take foreigners, who were stranded in India because of the COVID-19 outbreak, back to their countries.

Apart from rescue flights, Air India has been operating flights under Lifeline UDAN to transport essential medical supplies across the length and breadth of India.

It has so far operated a total of 154 flights, along with Alliance Air, under Lifeline UDAN.

In addition, Air India has also operated India's first flight under Krishi UDAN programme between Mumbai and London on April 13, carrying 29 tons of fruits and vegetables to London and returning with 15.6 tons of general cargo material. The national carrier operated its second flight between Mumbai and Frankfurt on April 15 under the Krishi UDAN program, carrying 27 tons of seasonal fruits and vegetables to Frankfurt and returning with 10 tons of general cargo.

The backdrop

The nationwide lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19 is expected to end on May 3. India has been under lockdown since March 25 to contain the spread of novel Coronavirus. The first phase of the lockdown was from 25 March to 14 April.
