New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Dr Srinivasa Kumar Tummala as Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, for a tenure of two years.

According to an official order, Dr Tummala is currently serving as Head of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS) Secretariat under the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Secretariat in Perth, Australia.
He has been appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, for a period of two years from the date of assuming charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Dr Tummala has extensive experience in ocean sciences, tsunami early warning systems and disaster risk reduction. In his current role, he heads the IOTWMS Secretariat, which coordinates tsunami warning and mitigation efforts among countries in the Indian Ocean region under UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and will take effect from the date Dr Tummala assumes charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
