Pithode, who is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), will assume the new role under the same ministry. His appointment will be for an overall tenure of five years, up to September 8, 2029, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

He succeeds Arvind Kumar Nautiyal, IRSME (1992), in the position.

The CAQM, a statutory body under the MoEFCC, is responsible for formulating coordinated strategies to tackle air pollution and improve air quality management across the NCR and its surrounding regions.
