New Delhi: Ministry of Mines Secretary Alok Tandon (IAS) has been assigned with the additional responsibility of Secretary of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoNG). The Central government has approved the assignment of the additional charge of the post of Secretary of MoPNG to Tandon on Tuesday. According to an order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Tandon has been given additional charge of the post with immediate effect and till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Earlier, Tarun Kapoor (IAS) was serving as Petroleum Secretary but he superannuated on November 30.
Tandon is a 1986-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. He was appointed as Secretary in the Ministry of Mines on January 23. He was also given additional charge as Secretary of Ministry of Coal for eight days in June this year. Previously, he has held the position of Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.
Tandon is an Electrical Engineer (B Tech) from IIT-Kanpur, 1984 batch, and the recipient of the President's Gold Medal. He has completed his Master's degree in Public Policy from Princeton University in 2006. He is also the recipient of the Chevening Gurukul Scholarship 2010 awarded by the British Government. He joined Indian Administrative Service in 1986 and was allotted UP cadre. He has held various positions in the government of UP, including Joint Secretary in Department of Heavy Industries and District Magistrate of three districts — Maharganj, Allahabad and Varanasi. He has also worked as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam, Lucknow.
MoPNG is responsible for the exploration, production, refining, distribution, marketing, import, export, and conservation of petroleum, natural gas, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas in India. The ministry is headed by Union Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
