New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Varun Bhardwaj (IIS) as Secretary of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education.

Bhardwaj is an Indian Information Service (IInfoS) officer of the 2008 batch. Prior to this appointment, Bhardwaj was serving as Director in the Department of Higher Education.
According to an order issued from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) issued on June 2, the appointment of Bhardwaj has been made on a deputation basis under the Central Staffing Scheme through a lateral shift arrangement. He will serve in the post until September 19, 2027, corresponding to his combined tenure of five years under the Central Staffing Scheme. He succeeds Himanshu Gupta in the role.

In a related development, the ACC has approved the premature repatriation of Himanshu Gupta (IAS) to his parent cadre in the Ministry of Home Affairs on administrative grounds. He was serving as Secretary of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
According to the DoPT order, Gupta is a 2012-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre. He has been repatriated with the condition of an “extended cooling-off” period. As per the order, he will be eligible for another central deputation only after December 12, 2030.
