New Delhi: Gyanendra Pratap Singh, a 1991-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, has officially taken charge as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Thursday. Prior to this appointment, Singh was serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Assam.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Singh's appointment, effective from the date he assumes charge, with a tenure extending until his superannuation on November 30, 2027, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. He succeeds Vitul Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, who had been serving as the officiating Director General following the retirement of Anish Dayal Singh on December 31, 2024.
Throughout his distinguished career, Singh has held various pivotal roles, including positions with the Special Protection Group (SPG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). In December 2019, he was appointed as the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) in Assam to address the violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. He also served as the Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in Assam and led the state's Rhino Protection Task Force.
The CRPF, established as the Crown Representatives Police on July 27, 1939, and renamed following the enactment of the CRPF Act on December 28, 1949, is India's largest paramilitary force. It plays a crucial role in maintaining internal security and combating insurgencies across the nation.
