Harjit Singh Grewal assumes charge as Chairman of National Commission for Minorities

New Delhi: Harjit Singh Grewal on Tuesday assumed charge as the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), marking a new phase in the Commission's efforts to promote the welfare, inclusion, empowerment and socio-economic development of minority communities.

According to an official statement, Grewal brings extensive experience in public life and organisational leadership and has been actively associated with initiatives aimed at promoting social harmony, public welfare and inclusive development.

Meanwhile, S. Munawari Begum, who is already a Member of the Commission, assumed office as the Vice Chairperson of the NCM on July 20. The government said her experience in public service is expected to strengthen the Commission's mandate of protecting minority rights, promoting equal opportunities and advancing inclusive governance.

The Commission also welcomed Glenn Souza Ticlo, who assumed office as a Member representing the Christian community. Ticlo previously served two consecutive terms as a Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly from the Aldona constituency between 2012 and 2022.

The statement noted that Berjis Desai had joined the National Commission for Minorities on March 10, 2026, as the Member representing the Parsi community. Desai is a senior High Court advocate and noted writer.

With the induction of the Chairman, Vice Chairperson and Members representing different minority communities, the Commission said it aims to further strengthen its efforts towards ensuring justice, equality, empowerment and inclusive development.
