New Delhi: Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas has been given tenure extension as Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission for a period of one year. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension in service of Vyas for a period of one year beyond May 3, 2021, i.e. up to May 3, 2022, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. He is serving as Secretary of DAE & Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission since September 21, 2018.
Vyas is a top nuclear scientist of the country. He had completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering with first class from MS University, Vadodara. In 1978, he quantified as a scientist trainee of the most prestigious Training School of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. After graduating from BARC training school, he joined as a scientist in the Reactor Engineering Division of BARC.
His exemplary untiring research work in the areas of "Nuclear fuel design for Indian nuclear reactors and strategic applications", "Thermal hydraulics and stress analysis of critical reactor core components" and "Design & analysis of the Test Blanket Module (TBM) for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), France," carried over a period of more than three decades, earned him to rise to the topmost grade of "Distinguished Scientist" at BARC. On February 23, 2016, he was appointed as the Director of BARC for his outstanding national and international contributions in nuclear energy.
