Power Ministry recommends ex Power, Telecom, MNRE Secretaries for CERC chairman post

Synopsis: The Ministry of Power has recommended the names of 10 former bureaucrats, including former Power Secretary Sanjiv Sahai, former Secretary of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Anand Kumar and former Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash for the position of the Chairman of CERC

New Delhi: The Ministry of Power has recommended the names of 10 former bureaucrats, including former Power Secretary Sanjiv Sahai, former Secretary of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Anand Kumar and former Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash for the position of the Chairman of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) which is slated to fall vacant in a few months, said a report by The Economic Times.

Quoting sources, the report said that the list of names also includes names of recently-retired Secretaries like, former Tourism Secretary Yogendra Tripathi and former Environment Secretary RP Gupta.

CERC Chairman position to fall vacant in June

The position of the CERC Chairman will fall vacant in June this year after the exit of incumbent PK Pujari. Pujari, former power secretary, was appointed to head CERC in February 2018 for three years. His appointment was later modified for a term of five years with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or until he attains the age of 65 years.

The CERC is a regulatory body that is responsible for regulating tariff of power generating companies, determining and regulating the tariff for inter-state transmission of power, adjudicating disputes involving generating companies or transmission licensee, among others.
