New Delhi: Sharmistha Maitra (IDES) is set to be Director in the Ministry of Defence. She was recommended for the Central deputation by the Ministry of Defence. According to an order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Maitra has been recommended for the appointment under Central Staffing Scheme (CSS) for a period of five years from the date of taking over charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Maitra is an Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES) of 2005-batch. Previously, she was serving as Deputy Director General (DDG) in the Directorate General Defence Estates under Ministry of Defence.
Maitra is a science graduate (B.Sc). She also completed her post-graduation in arts and Masters of Philosophy (M. Phil). She has held various important positions such as Deputy Director (DE) Eastern Command, CEO of Cantonment Board, Jammu among others.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the Indian armed forces. The President is the ceremonial commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the country. The Ministry of Defence provides policy framework and resources to the armed forces to discharge their responsibility in the context of the defence of the country. The Indian Armed Forces including Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard under the Ministry of Defences, are primarily responsible for ensuring the territorial integrity of the nation.
