Sujata Chaturvedi (IAS) assumes charge as Member of UPSC

The senior bureaucrat Sujata Chaturvedi has officially assumed charge as a Member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Wednesday

New Delhi: Sujata Chaturvedi, a senior bureaucrat and former Secretary in the Department of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, has officially assumed charge as a Member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Wednesday.

The Oath of Office and Secrecy was administered by Lt. Gen. Raj Shukla (Retd.), the senior-most Member of the Commission, during a formal ceremony held in New Delhi.

A 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Bihar cadre, Chaturvedi brings over three decades of administrative experience across both the central and state governments. Her extensive service record includes key assignments such as Principal Secretary, Department of Finance; Commercial Tax Commissioner; and Vice Chairman, Department of Urban Development in the Government of Bihar.

At the Centre, she has served in several high-ranking positions, including Secretary, Department of Sports; Additional Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT); and Regional Deputy Director General at the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

During her tenure as Secretary in the Sports Ministry, Chaturvedi played a pivotal role in implementing several national-level initiatives aimed at boosting India’s sports ecosystem. These included the successful hosting of major sporting events such as the Khelo India Games, the FIDE Chess Olympiad, and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. She was also instrumental in the rollout of the National Sports Repository System, nationwide mapping of standard sports facilities, and the enactment of the Anti-Doping Bill, aimed at reinforcing the country’s commitment to clean sports.

Academically, Chaturvedi holds a graduation degree in English and a post-graduation in History from Nagpur University. She also possesses an M.Phil. in Public Administration and a diploma in the Russian language.

Hailing from Maharashtra, she is multilingual, fluent in Hindi, English, Urdu, Russian, and Marathi.
