New Delhi: Sunil Barthwal, Secretary of Department of Commerce, has assumed additional charge as Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal
Trade (DPIIT) from October 23 to October 28 in the absence of Anurag Jain. "The Competent Authority (Appointments Committee of the Cabinet) has approved the assignment of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade to Shri Sunil Barthwal, lAS (BH:1989), Secretary, Department of Commerce from 23.10.2022 to 28.10.2022 during the period of absence on leave of Shri Anurag Jam, lAS (MP:1989)," said an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

Currently, Sunil Barthwal is heading the Department of Commerce as Secretary. Prior to this, he was serving as Secretary of Ministry of Labour & Employment. Barthwal is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer of Bihar Cadre. He is a post-graduate in Economics. He completed his BA Economics (Hons) from St Stephen's College, Delhi, and procured an MA degree in Economics from JNU, Delhi. He has a PG Diploma in Economics of Competition Law from King's College, London.

During his rich and varied experience as an IAS Officer, he has held various administrative positions in the areas of finance, social security, investment, infrastructure, mines, steel, energy, transport etc in the government at the Central and state levels. He has also worked in the Competition Commission of India.

Barthwal has been on the Boards of SAIL, NMDC, MECON, MSTC & NIIF. He was the CEO of Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, which is the largest social security organisation of India. He has been instrumental in undertaking many reforms at EPFO that resulted in making it a more efficient, transparent and delivery-oriented organisation. He has represented India on many international forums.
