New Delhi: The feasibility study for equipping Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport with a world-class inter-terminal "air train" or "automated people mover" (APM) has been conducted and the costing of the project has also been done by Delhi International Airport Limited, industry sources said. However, they added that the airport operator might take a while for the financial closure for its inter-terminal APM project.
The project, which envisages a driverless monorail system that takes passengers between terminals and acts as a link between the terminals and other means of public transport, is expected to cost Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 2,000 crore. The project has, however, been moving at a slow pace because of the huge cost involved in putting together a transportation system like that.
Many international airports around the world boast of such facilities which makes it convenient for passengers to catch connecting flights and move between terminals.
IGI already has new roads, underpass and transport mediums that facilitate movement at the airport. But a monorail is going to drastically cut down the time taken to shuttle between terminals.
