Hindalco suspends bauxite production at Jharkhand plant

New Delhi: Hindalco Industries, a company owned by Aditya Birla Group, has put a hold on bauxite production at its Jharkhand plant due to spillage of bauxite residue in areas around the storage facility. "There was an incident in the red mud (bauxite residue) storage area connected to the alumina plant situated at Muri, Jharkhand, on Tuesday," an official statement released by the company said on Wednesday.

"Four people were injured in the incident and have received treatment, while one contract workman is missing, also the incident is not expected to impact the company's performance"- Hindalco management

It also said that many people are believed to be trapped and swept away in the debris as the caustic pond suddenly broke up following a land cave-in at Muri, some 25 km from Ranchi.

Preliminary investigation reveals no material impact

Operations have been suspended temporarily at the plant as a precautionary measure to assess the situation, the company said. They also said that preliminary investigations have indicated no material impact on the surrounding environment or to property. Efforts are on to clear the spillage.

Four people injured, one missing

Hindalco said that four people were injured in the incident and have received treatment, while one contract workman is missing. The statement said that the incident is not expected to impact the company's performance.

Hindalco's shares slipped by 2 percent to settle at Rs 211 on Wednesday.
