MCL signs MoU with NIT Rourkela for Rs 43 crore Girls’ hostel to promote STEM education

The initiative is part of MCL’s ongoing commitment to CSR and aims to foster higher education opportunities for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines

New Delhi: Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, for the construction of a Rs 43 crore girls’ hostel named “MCL Hall of Residence.” The initiative is part of MCL’s ongoing commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and aims to foster higher education opportunities for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines.

The MoU has been signed in the presence of MCL's Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) Uday Anant Kaole; Director (Human Resources) Keshav Rao; and NIT Rourkela's Director Prof. K Umamaheshwar Rao along with other senior officials from both institutions.

Designed to accommodate a significant number of girl students, the new facility will be equipped with modern amenities such as fire safety systems, LAN connectivity, CCTV surveillance, and rainwater harvesting, offering a safe and conducive living environment for academic growth.

This marks another milestone in MCL’s sustained partnership with NIT Rourkela. With this project, MCL’s total CSR contribution to the institute stands at Rs 93.77 crore. Previous contributions include financial support for an earlier 500-seater girls’ hostel and the establishment of a Technology Business Incubator (TBI) to promote innovation and entrepreneurship.

Speaking on the occasion, MCL officials reiterated the company’s commitment to empowering communities and enhancing educational infrastructure, especially for women, to create a more inclusive and progressive learning ecosystem.
