The Maharatna power PSU has been supporting archery under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives since November 2018, when it made an initial commitment of Rs 16.18 crore. The partnership was renewed in September 2025 for another four years, with a fresh commitment of Rs 24.20 crore.

The collaboration supports national championships across sub-junior, junior and senior categories, along with National Ranking Archery Tournaments, providing athletes with structured opportunities to develop their skills and progress towards international competitions.

With NTPC’s support, around 53 national tournaments and championships have been organised, recording approximately 24,096 participant entries. The company has also supported kits and uniforms for Indian archers competing internationally, covering 1,145 athlete participations across 88 events.

NTPC is also investing in sports infrastructure to expand access to professional training. In October 2025, NTPC Bongaigaon signed an agreement with the Mizoram State Sports Council to establish an archery academy at Lengpui in Mamit district, with a commitment of Rs 5.28 crore over three years.

The proposed academy will provide professional coaching, modern equipment and structured training facilities to prepare young archers for district, state and national-level competitions. The initiative is expected to strengthen sporting opportunities in the Northeast and bring specialised training closer to emerging talent.

The impact of sustained support for archery is reflected in the achievements of athletes such as Kumkum Anil Mohod of Amravati, Maharashtra. Coming from a modest background, she began her archery journey with a bow purchased by her grandmother before progressing to the international stage.

According to the press release, Mohod won gold in the women’s individual recurve event at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, becoming the first Indian woman to achieve the feat. She had also helped India secure its first women’s team recurve gold at the Games.

NTPC’s archery initiatives extend to women and para archers, scholarships, equipment support, sports science and competitive exposure. These efforts are aimed at building a sustainable talent pipeline by supporting athletes from the grassroots level through national competitions and international events.

The company’s sports development programme forms part of its broader CSR engagement beyond its core power generation business, with a focus on strengthening sporting infrastructure and creating opportunities for young athletes across the country.
