New Delhi: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has achieved a major milestone in indigenous defence manufacturing with the successful productionisation of India’s first Wire Guided Heavy Weight Torpedo (WGHWT). This marks a significant step towards self-reliance in advanced naval weapon systems.

The Defence PSU, under the Ministry of Defence, delivered the production-grade torpedo to the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) at its Visakhapatnam unit on April 23.
BDL acted as the Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) for the project and collaborated closely with NSTL, a premier laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), to realise the complex underwater weapon system.
The torpedo has been developed in both practice and combat configurations and incorporates advanced technology, including state-of-the-art homing and propulsion systems. It is also equipped with sophisticated search, attack and re-attack capabilities, which are expected to significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of the Indian Navy.
Senior officials, including Dr. R. V. Hara Prasad, Distinguished Scientist and Director General (NS&M), and Commodore A. Madhavarao (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director of BDL, along with Dr. Abraham Varughese, Director, NSTL, were present during the milestone event.
The achievement highlights the success of collaborative efforts between DRDO and BDL in strengthening India’s indigenous defence ecosystem. It also underscores the role of industry partners, including MSMEs, in the development and production of advanced military technologies.
