The agreement has been formalised through the signing of a Tripartite Master Research Agreement (MRA), which will provide a structured framework for joint research execution, access to advanced research infrastructure and operational alignment between the three institutions. The agreement was signed at the IISc campus in the presence of BEML's Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Shantanu Roy; IISc Bengaluru's Director Prof Govindan Rangarajan; and FSID's Director Prof B Gurumoorthy, along with senior leadership from BEML and representatives of all partner institutions.

Under the partnership, BEML, IISc and FSID will collaborate on blue-sky, applied and translational research in critical areas such as aerospace and defence, rail and metro systems, mining and construction equipment, maritime technologies, next-generation mobility, green technologies and advanced manufacturing. The initiative is aimed at accelerating technology development aligned with national priorities, including indigenisation and self-reliance.

Commenting on the development, Shantanu Roy said the collaboration marks an important milestone in BEML’s transformation into a future-ready, innovation-led engineering enterprise. “By integrating academic excellence, advanced research and industrial engineering capabilities, we aim to accelerate the development of critical technologies across defence, mobility, infrastructure and green manufacturing,” he said.

Prof B Gurumoorthy said the partnership strengthens the industry–academia–innovation ecosystem by enabling the transition of advanced research into real-world technologies. He noted that such collaborations are crucial for building India’s capabilities in strategic sectors such as defence, mobility and advanced manufacturing.

The collaboration will be anchored through BEML’s newly established Central Research Facility (CRF), envisioned as a centre of excellence for advanced research, technology development and proof-of-concept initiatives aligned with the company’s long-term strategic roadmap. The framework enables joint knowledge creation, simulation and modelling, prototype development, validation of critical technologies and generation of intellectual property.

BEML has committed significant R&D investments to support and sustain the collaborative research programmes. Aligned with the company’s R&D policy and global best practices in research governance, the partnership aims to build a sustainable, innovation-driven research ecosystem while enhancing industrial competitiveness and long-term technological leadership.
