New Delhi/Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has achieved another milestone with the launch of a 140-feet double-lane Modular Steel Bridge (MSB) in a record time of just seven days to ease vehicular traffic congestion at Lake Town on VIP Road in Kolkata.
The bridge, fabricated and launched on January 16, has been constructed for the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). This marks the first instance in Kolkata where an advanced double-lane Modular Steel Bridge of Class-70 has been launched, and that too within a compressed timeframe of seven days, despite significant constraints posed by heavy traffic at the site.
GRSE said the achievement reflects the expertise of its engineering team and taskforce, which successfully manufactured and launched the advanced version of the Bailey Bridge using proprietary design and technology, supported by meticulous workflow management.
The newly launched bridge has a carriageway width of 7.50 metres, which is double the width of an earlier Bailey Bridge installed by GRSE across the Kestopur Canal. It also features a galvanised surface finish, ensuring easier maintenance and a longer service life.
Designed to handle heavy traffic, the bridge has a load-bearing capacity of up to 100 metric tonnes, enabling the movement of heavy vehicular loads and contributing to improved traffic flow and connectivity in the area.
