New Delhi: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has secured its largest-ever order after the Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth Rs 53,866.50 crore for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy on November 2, 2026.
Under the programme, GSL will construct three advanced frontline warships, while the remaining five corvettes will be built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE).
The order marks a major milestone for GSL and reflects the government's confidence in the shipyard's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, technological expertise and project execution track record.
Indigenously designed by the Indian Navy, the Next Generation Corvettes are expected to significantly strengthen India's maritime combat capabilities, particularly in surveillance, deterrence and operational preparedness across the maritime domain.
The programme is also expected to provide a major boost to India's domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem by strengthening the indigenous shipbuilding value chain and creating opportunities for Indian industries, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and skilled manpower.
For GSL, the contract represents a significant expansion of its role in India's naval shipbuilding programme and reinforces its position in the country's indigenous defence manufacturing sector.
The shipyard said it remains committed to delivering advanced warships and strengthening indigenous shipbuilding capabilities in line with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
