New Delhi: There are a total of nine Defence Public Sector Undertakings (Defence PSUs) under the administrative control of Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. The responsibility of Defence PSUs is to provide advanced defence equipment to the Armed Forces as well as to enhance the country's self-reliance in defence production. But, most of the Defence PSUs are dependent on external sources for their production needs.

However, the government has taken several steps to improve the order book position that includes modernisation of production capacity and infrastructure, emphasis on import substitution and indigenisation, promotion of exports, introduction of new technologies, product diversification, setting up of JVs with foreign companies and preference being given to 'Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)' equipment under Capital Acquisition in Defence Procurement Procedure 2016, Minister of State for Defence Shripad Yesso Naik said in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The order book volume of Defence PSUs depends on the customers, which primarily includes the Armed Forces and export opportunities in the international market.

Here is a list of defence PSUs with their order books.
