Constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, INS Taragiri is the third vessel under the prestigious Project 17A programme. The warship represents a major advancement in indigenous warship design, with its basic design developed by the Navy’s in-house Warship Design Bureau, while MDL executed the detailed design and construction with oversight from the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai).

Measuring 149.02 metres in length and 17.8 metres in width, with a displacement of around 6,400 tonnes, INS Taragiri is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system comprising two gas turbines and two diesel engines, enabling speeds exceeding 28 knots. The vessel is equipped with advanced stealth features, modern weapon systems, cutting-edge sensors and automated systems to enhance operational efficiency.

The induction of INS Taragiri is expected to significantly strengthen India’s maritime capabilities, particularly in surveillance, operational reach and security across the Indian Ocean Region. The warship is also armed with sophisticated systems, including successful pre-commissioning test firing of BrahMos missiles—marking a first for the Project 17A class.

MDL has achieved notable efficiency gains in the construction of the vessel, reducing the build period by 14 percent compared to the first ship in the series. The ship also completed sea trials and final machinery trials within three months of basin trials, reflecting improved project execution and coordination between MDL and the Navy.

The commissioning of INS Taragiri underscores India’s push towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, with approximately 75 percent indigenous content in the warship. The project highlights strong collaboration between the Indian Navy, MDL and a broad ecosystem of domestic industries, including MSMEs, generating significant employment opportunities.

The successful induction further reinforces India’s growing capability to design and build complex warships domestically, enhancing its position as a rising global maritime power.
