AAI pledge to promote Tobacco-free on World Tobacco Day

In their message to the employees and stakeholders, the APDs highlighted the health and other related risks of consuming tobacco on 'World Tobacco Day'

Guwahati: Airports under the Airports Authority of India's (AAI) North Eastern Region (NER) observed World Tobacco Day on Friday with a pledge-taking ceremony to promote Tobacco-free premises and an oath to say no to tobacco in daily life. The oath was administered by the officiating Regional Executive Director at Regional HQ, Guwahati and by all the respective Airport Directors (APDs) at their Airports and stations.

In their message on 'World Tobacco Day' to the employees and stakeholders, the APDs highlighted the health and other related risks of consuming tobacco. APDs also held a sensitisation session for advocating to reduce the usage of tobacco and also make their family members aware of the same. The message on the harmful effects of tobacco was displayed through banners and posters at the terminal building of NER airports. These messages were also played on the electronic display of all prominent points of airports. Notice and messages depicting 'premise/ building are tobacco-free and 'you are entering tobacco-free zone' were place at arrival and departure points of passenger movement areas at the terminal buildings. Displayed messages also included the prohibition of tobacco and penalty for use of same in this premises.

World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31 May. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to more than 7 million deaths each year worldwide, including 890,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
