New Delhi: The Geological Survey of India (GSI), under the Ministry of Mines, is organising a two-day International Seminar titled “Unearthing the Past, Shaping the Future: 175 Years of GSI” on November 20–21, at the Rajasthan International Centre (RIC) in Jaipur as part of its year-long 175th anniversary celebrations.
The inaugural session will be addressed by Union Coal & Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy, in the presence of Piyush Goyal, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, and T Ravikanth, Principal Secretary, Mines & Petroleum, Government of Rajasthan.
The seminar is being led by Asit Saha, Director General, GSI and Patron of the event, and Vijay V. Mugal, Additional Director General & Head of Western Region, who is also serving as Chairman of the seminar. Senior officials, leading geoscientists, researchers and delegates from India and abroad are expected to participate.
Established in 1851, GSI has played a key role in geological mapping, mineral exploration, the identification of critical and strategic minerals, geohazard studies and advancing geoscientific knowledge to support national development. The International Seminar aims to bring global experts together to discuss emerging challenges, technological advancements and the future direction of the geosciences sector.
The technical programme comprises nine plenary lectures, 19 special lectures and more than 300 scientific and poster presentations across 11 thematic areas. Experts from the British Geological Survey (BGS), United States Geological Survey (USGS), Geoscience Australia and leading academic institutions including Lancaster University (UK), University of Michigan and University of Texas (USA), and the Italian National Research Council will participate.
An exhibition featuring advanced technologies, geospatial tools and innovations by leading institutions and industry representatives will run alongside the event. The seminar will also witness the signing of MoUs with IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur to bolster collaboration in frontier geoscience research and capacity building.
Marking a major milestone in GSI’s 175-year journey, the event underscores the institution’s commitment to scientific excellence, sustainable resource development and international knowledge exchange.
