MCL secures top honours with nine mines winning 5-Star Rating at Coal Ministry awards

Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has been awarded with the Ministry of Coal’s Star Rating Awards, with nine of its coal mines receiving the coveted 5-Star Rating for the year 2023–24

New Delhi/Sambalpur: State-owned Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has bagged top honours at the Ministry of Coal’s Star Rating Awards, with nine of its coal mines receiving the coveted 5-Star Rating for the year 2023–24.

The recognition covers two underground mines- Hirakhand-Bundia and Orient Colliery Mine No. 1 & 2, and seven opencast mines, namely - Kulda, Ananta, Samleshwari, Bhubaneswari, Lajkura, Belpahar, and the Gopalji-Kaniha Expansion project.

The awards have been presented in Mumbai by Union Minister of Coal & Mines G Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Coal & Mines Satish Chandra Dubey, and Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt. MCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Uday Anant Kaole, Director (Finance) A K Behura, and Area General Managers of the respective mines received the awards on behalf of the company.

The Star Rating system, awarded on a scale of one to five, evaluates mines on parameters such as operational excellence, safety performance, environmental sustainability, technology adoption, and economic contribution. A 5-Star rating represents the highest benchmark of excellence in coal mining.

MCL said the recognition underscores its focus on sustainable and responsible mining practices, alongside its contribution to ensuring energy security for the country.
