Dhanbad: A memorandum of agreement (MoA) for research and development (R&D) works was signed between NHPC Limited and Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad on November 27 in the august presence of NHPC's Director (Technical) Janardan Choudhary and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's Profesor Rajiv Shekhar. NHPC's Executive Director (R&D) Gobinda Baidya and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's Dean (R&D) Profesor Shalivahan signed the MoA on behalf of NHPC and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad respectively. Under the scope of the agreement IIT (ISM), Dhanbad would provide research and development and consultancy services within its expertise to NHPC.
Speaking about this collaboration Choudhary emphasise the need of the industry-academia collaboration to derive maximum benefits for mutual growth. NHPC, India's premier hydropower company is providing a balancing requirement of the grid, through both bases as well as peak power supply. With the proposed large scale integration of the renewable energy in the system, the requirement of hydropower would further increase as it provides stability to the grid. He further added that NHPC in its plants is also facing the problem of erosion in turbine parts and also issues related to silt handling, where collaborative research can be of use to NHPC.
On this occasion, Director (IIT-ISM) Dhanbad Rajeev Shekhar, elaborated the technology and policy vision adopted in the area of mining by IIT – ISM and suggested that similar approach may also be adopted in the hydropower sector. Further he showed interest in setting up of the team for the power flow analysis.
