NMDC CMD calls for ‘smart, safe and sustainable’ mining at MEAI national conference

New Delhi: The Mining Engineers’ Association of India (MEAI) on Friday inaugurated its two-day National Conference on “Mining 4.0: Advanced Technologies for Safe and Sustainable Mining Operations” in Hyderabad, bringing together industry leaders, mining professionals, academicians and policymakers to discuss the growing role of technology in modern mining.

The conference was inaugurated by NMDC Limited's Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Amitava Mukherjee, who underscored the importance of leveraging technology to achieve safer, more efficient and environmentally responsible mining operations.

Addressing the gathering, Mukherjee emphasized that safety and sustainability must remain at the core of mining activities, noting that digitalisation, automation and advanced monitoring systems are transforming the sector. He highlighted the industry's opportunity to meet growing demand for iron ore, steel and critical minerals while ensuring responsible mining practices and continuous innovation.

The event was presided over by Vinay Kumar, who also serves as Chairman of the MEAI Hyderabad Chapter, while Joydeep Dasgupta attended as Guest of Honour.

Technical sessions on the opening day focused on the adoption of digitalisation, automation, artificial intelligence, geospatial technologies and smart monitoring systems to enhance mine safety, operational efficiency and environmental performance. Participants also stressed the need to translate research and innovation into practical solutions that can be deployed across mining operations.

NMDC showcased its ongoing deployment of advanced technologies, including automated drilling systems, remote sensing, digital monitoring platforms and real-time analytics, as part of its broader strategy to promote safe, efficient and sustainable mining practices. The conference will continue on June 13 with expert discussions and technical sessions on emerging trends shaping the future of the mining industry.
