Rourkela: The Plate Mill collective of SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), exhibiting exemplary ownership and innovativeness, has successfully addressed the circuital problem of High-Pressure De-scaling Pumps. The effort has helped the department in reducing downtime and enhancing operational safety.

The collective modified the interlocking circuit of High-Pressure De-Scaling pumps and installed a new indication system as part of the modification to achieve success.

Notably, the old High-Pressure De-scaling Pumps in the Plate Mill were being run from SIEMENS 6.6 KV High Tension feeder panels. The interlocking circuit of all the three panels were different and indication of status of breaker was not available at the operator's end. These issues used to create inconvenience in troubleshooting and operational practice.

In order to solve the circuital problem, the team took several measures in association with other departments concerned. All the old HT breakers were replaced by new 6.6 Air circuit breakers by the Power Distribution Department. After this, an operator control station and an indication panel were installed. New pressure manometers were also mounted for the purpose of interlocking at the inlet of pumps.

All these modifications and installations have helped in identifying control circuit problems with less manpower, ensuring operational safety and minimising downtime due to reduced lead time for problem mitigation.
