New Delhi: In order to witness the newest technologies in the coal mining field, Coal India Chairman Pramod Agrawal (IAS) is visiting the USA. Dr B Veera Reddy, Director-Technical, Coal India & M.K.Singh, ED & TS to Chairman are also accompanying the Chairman on the USA visit. On Monday team CIL visited & examined the Highwall mining equipment and its operation at Ben's Creek Operations, a mine at Logan in West Virginia. Reportedly, the CIL delegation was impressed with about 70% extraction of coal reserves by high wall mining. They discussed the operations with Dave Johns, the Project Manager of Highwall operations at the mine.
It is important to mention here that Coal India is looking to unlock the reserves stranded in the opencast mines that were discontinued after reaching a limited stripping ratio. In this light, the ongoing trip to Highwall mining may prove to be an important step for the gainful extraction of high-grade coal in ECL, BCCL, and CCL.
