New Delhi: Coal India plans to supply 530 million tonnes of coal to the power sector in financial year 2019-20, up 8.6 percent from what the state-owned coal producer exported in the previous fiscal year. Even though the public sector undertaking has not yet decided a target for coal production in the current financial year, it is likely to be around 650 million tonnes, sources said.

"In FY'20, we have assured the government to supply 530 million tonnes of coal to the power sector. Supply to the power sector during the last year was 488 million tonnes, a rise of 7.5 percent over 2017-18," sources said.

According to sources, the supply target set by Coal India is based on the feedback and projections by the government for the power sector.

Focus to be on fulling demand from power sector

After a year of facing severe backlash for not supplying enough coal to power plants, Coal India is set to retain focus on fulfilling the demand from the sector. In FY2018-19, the CIL's share of despatch to the power sector had increased to 80 percent and the PSU aims to push it further this year.

This year, the share of coal allocated under e-auction segment has also been drastically reduced to 12.6 percent of production, down from 16.9 percent in 2017-18 and 20.5 percent in 2016-17.
