New Delhi: It might cost air passengers flying out of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport a small fee, ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 50, to get their baggage screened on X-ray machines, pushing up the overall expenditure faced by airline passengers travelling from the airport. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), Delhi's airport operator, will charge fees ranging from Rs 110 to Rs 880 per aircraft on domestic routes from February.

Loaded luggage is usually checked by the airport operator as cabin luggage screening and passenger frisking is conducted by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials.

The charges levied for international flights will likely range from US$209.55 to US$149.33 on airplanes. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) permitted DIAL to charge passengers for the extra baggage screening charges. "A passenger who takes a domestic flight is unlikely to pay more than Rs 5 as 'X-ray baggage charge'. On an international flight, the per-passenger charge would not be more than Rs 50," a source said. Loaded luggage is usually checked by the airport operator as cabin luggage screening and passenger frisking is conducted by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials.

AERA is a statutory body which determines the tariff for aeronautical services, including passenger service fees, development fees, as well as monitors performance standards. Since last year, passengers flying from the airport had to shell out an extra Rs 77 for tickets purchased with Indian rupees towards facilitation component of the Passenger Service Fee (PSF). The airport regulator — formed in 2009 — decides on airport fees at all major airports in India. The regulator was formed following the government's decision to allow private companies to own airports with the privatisation of airports in Delhi and Mumbai.
