New Delhi: Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of the machine vision-based inspection system (MVIS) for monitoring rolling stock health. The MoU has been signed between both of the organisations in the presence of DFCCIL's Managing Director Ravindra Kumar Jain and IISc's Director Govindan Rangarajan. Senior officers of DFCCIL and senior faculty of IISc were also present on the occasion.

Recently, Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has urged start-ups to join hands with Railways in providing technological solutions to problems. The startups should develop a proof of concept (PoC) and develop products not just for India, but for the world. MVIS is one such solution. It's a relatively new and emerging technology with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning capabilities. The system will capture the image of under-gear of moving trains and generate alerts in case any hanging, loose or missing components are detected. This will greatly enhance safe operations and help in avoiding any untoward incidences or accidents. MVIS for freight stock is not installed anywhere on Indian Railways to date.

One of the objectives of DFCCIL is to introduce modern technologies. The signing of this MoU is poised to open avenues for improving safety on DFCCIL. The signing of this MoU is not only a step towards meeting the above-mentioned objective of DFCCIL but is also in line with the guiding principle of IISc. This MoU also fulfils in letter and spirit the Government of India's policy of "Make in India" and "Atamnirbhar Bharat" to develop technologies and solutions in India and take it all over the world.
