Kanpur: Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot inaugurated the 'Renovated ALIMCO Orthotics and Prosthetic Centre' (AOPC) and a residential complex building of ALIMCO Headquarters at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. With this, two of the projects under the modernisation plan of ALIMCO have been completed.

'Divyang have benefitted from govt schemes'

Delivering the inaugural address, Gehlot said, "Prior to 2014, the physically challenged were not getting the desired attention. Today Divyang students get scholarships for education in foreign countries also." He said that 2,022 children below six years of age with profound hearing loss have benefitted from the government scheme and have now started hearing.

He said that soon ALIMCO will do ToT for development of "Voice Box" for throat cancer patients, and after the completion of the project, this throat prosthetic will be made available for the general public for approximately Rs 3,000. Gehlot also gave away advance Diwali gift to ALIMCO's employees by announcing an increase in their limit of post-retirement insurance scheme from Rs 3 lakh to 6 lakh and increasing their Medical Leaves from 90 to 180.

During the function, a symbolic metal structure of 'Swavlamban Tree' inspired by the logo of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities was also unveiled by the Union Minister.

'Through ALIMCO, PwDs will get modern facilities'

Shakuntala D Gamlin, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, said that through modernisation of ALIMCO, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the region will get modern rehabilitation facilities.
