New Delhi: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh handed over Medium-Range Surface-to-Air-Missile (MR SAM) to Indian Air Force at a ceremony held to commemorate the golden jubilee celebrations of defence PSU Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) on Saturday. The missile has been developed by BDL in collaboration with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Singh said that modernising the armed forces is the government's priority and it is committing towards meeting the nation's defence requirements through indigenisation.

He also said, "I would like to reiterate that the modernisation of the armed forces is our priority. We would like to fulfil every requirement of the army through indigenisation only."
Singh said that defence equipment would be imported only if the situation demanded that it was important and was not being manufactured in the country. He added that the government would otherwise want all weapons to be made in the country.
The minister said that the defence sector would play an important role in making the country a $5 trillion economy through Foreign Direct Investment and offset investment in manufacturing.
Singh also lauded the role played by BDL in ramping up the country's defence production capabilities and assured the PSU of full support from the government.
