Purwar has been appointed to the post by the government for a period of three months starting July 1, subject to the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), for ensuring continuity at the struggling PSU.

An order released by the Department of Telecom (DoT) said, "Consequent to the retirement upon the superannuation of Anupam Shrivastava, CMD, BSNL, on 30.06.2019, in order to ensure continuity as an interim measure and subject to the approval of the ACC, the additional charge of CMD, BSNL, is entrusted to PK Purwar, CMD of MTNL, for a period of three months wef 1.07.2019 or till the appointment of a regular incumbent to the post or until further orders, whichever is earliest." Even though Purwar will hold the additional charge of the topmost position at BSNL, he will not be entitled to any additional remuneration.

His appointment to the post was approved by the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) in January this year. The MTNL CMD is taking charge of the post at a time when both the state-run telecom companies are struggling to keep their finances in shape under stiff competition.
