NHPC posts modest Q1 profit growth as higher revenue lifts earnings

State-run hydropower major reports 15 percent rise in income, signalling improved generation and operational performance despite seasonal challenges

New Delhi: State-owned hydropower producer NHPC Ltd began FY27 on a steady note, reporting a modest increase in quarterly profit on the back of higher revenues, reflecting improved operational performance during the April-June period.

The company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,178.09 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, up 4.1 percent from Rs 1,131.16 crore reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year, according to a regulatory filing.

The earnings growth came alongside a stronger top line, with total income rising 15 percent year-on-year to Rs 3,959.72 crore, compared with Rs 3,442.76 crore in the year-ago quarter.

Revenue growth offsets margin pressures

The performance indicates that NHPC benefited from higher electricity generation and improved realisations during the quarter, even as hydropower companies typically contend with lower reservoir levels at the start of the financial year before the onset of the monsoon.

The double-digit increase in income substantially outpaced profit growth, suggesting that higher operating costs, finance expenses or depreciation may have partly offset the benefit of stronger revenues.

While the company did not provide a detailed segment-wise break-up in its quarterly filing, the improvement in income reflects stable demand for clean electricity amid rising power consumption across the country.

Hydropower remains central to India's energy transition

NHPC, India's largest hydropower developer, plays a critical role in the country's renewable energy strategy by supplying peak-hour electricity and providing grid-balancing support for rapidly expanding solar and wind capacity.

The company has also been diversifying beyond conventional hydropower by expanding its presence in solar and other renewable energy projects, in line with the government's objective of accelerating the clean energy transition.

The June-quarter results come at a time when electricity demand continues to remain robust, driven by industrial activity, urbanisation and higher cooling requirements, strengthening the long-term outlook for power generators.

Focus shifts to execution pipeline

Investors will now closely watch NHPC's progress in commissioning under-construction hydropower projects and scaling up its renewable energy portfolio, both of which are expected to be key growth drivers over the next few years.

Market participants will also monitor the impact of a healthy monsoon on reservoir levels, as improved water availability during the coming quarters typically supports higher generation from hydropower stations and strengthens earnings.

Although the June-quarter profit growth remained moderate, the sharp increase in revenue suggests that NHPC has started FY27 on a stable footing, with its diversified clean energy portfolio positioning it to benefit from India's rising electricity demand and continued policy emphasis on renewable power.
