NHPC restarts commercial operation of its oldest 180 MW Baira Siul Power Station

NHPC has indigenously and successfully renovated and modernised its 180 MW Baira Siul Power Station and commenced its commercial operation

New Delhi: NHPC Limited has indigenously and successfully renovated and modernised its 180 MW Baira Siul Power Station and commenced its commercial operation, an official statement released by the Ministry of Power on Thursday said. The Baira Siul Power Station is NHPC's first and oldest power station which had commenced commercial operation on April 1, 1982. It had completed 35 years of operation and hence renovation and modernisation of all the three units was undertaken to extend the life of the power station.

"NHPC has commenced commercial operation of Unit #2 & Unit #1 on 00:00 Hrs. of December 29, 2019, and 00:00 Hrs. of November 27, 2020, respectively. The third Unit (Unit #3) has been declared under commercial operation on 00:00 Hrs. of August 31. As such after renovation and modernization works, NHPC has commenced commercial operation of all three Units (3 x 60 MW) of Baira Siul Power Station," said the statement.

After R&M works, the life of Baira Siul Power Station has now been extended by another 25 years. The contract for the renovation and modernisation of the three units of Baira Siul hydro power station located in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh was given to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) amidst stiff competitive bidding. BHEL's scope in the project comprises design, manufacture, supply, replacement and commissioning of critical parts of turbines and auxiliaries, governors, generators and control and monitoring.
