NLC India Ltd to contribute Rs 25 crore to ‘PM CARES fund’

New Delhi: State-run Navratna coal PSU NLC India Limited and its employees have come forward to help the nation in the fight against global pandemic Coronavirus (COVID-19). The company has decided to contribute Rs 20 crore from its corporate social responsibility (CSR) fund to 'PM CARES (Prime Minister's citizen assistance and relief in emergency situations) fund' to assist the government in its fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country. The announcement came on the fifth day of the lockdown which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to control the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

In addition to this, the employees of the company have contributed their one-day salary, amounting to a total of Rs 5 crore, for the cause. The information was shared by NLC India Limited in a tweet on Monday.

NLC India Limited, formerly known as Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited, is a 'Navratna' PSU company in the fossil fuel mining sector in India and thermal power generation. It was incorporated in 1956 and was wholly-owned by the government. It annually produces about 30 million tonne lignite from opencast mines at Neyveli in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India and at Barsingsar in Bikaner district of Rajasthan state. The lignite is used at pithead thermal power stations of 3,240 MW installed capacity to produce electricity. Its joint venture has a 1,000 MW thermal power station using coal.
